Baldwin, Long Island, New York has a long history. The indigenous people to the area were Native Americans known as the Meroke, or Merrick. They lived in villages along Milburn Creek. In the 1640’s, John Hicks of Flushing and Edward Spragg, an Englishman, settled on Hick’s Neck, which is now modern day Baldwin Harbor. In 1855, the village was officially founded as Baldwinsville, named after Thomas Baldwin, a sixth-generation member of the Baldwin family of Hempstead and the leading merchant of Milburn at the time. He owned a general store in town named T. Baldwin and Sons.

Back in 1882, there were just 1,200 people living in the community of Baldwin. As of the 2010 census, there were 24,000 people living in the area, or 7,800 households. Baldwin is proud to be a diverse place to live. The racial makeup of the area was 40% Non-Hispanic White, 35% African American, 20% Hispanic or Latino, 4% Asian, and 0.2% Native American.

The median income for a household in Baldwin was $72,000 according to the 2010 census. Males had a median income of about $10,000 more than females. About 1.1% of families were below the poverty line. Baldwin is served primarily by the Baldwin Union Free School District. Small parts of Baldwin are also served by Oceanside, Rockville Center, Roosevelt, and Freeport school districts. Baldwin has its own Long Island Railroad station, easily accessible from the LIRR’s Babylon branch.
